I should add that I have seen answers from Carroll on the web (I haven't verified it). "Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!"

True, but there have been answers given. For instance, 'Poe wrote on both' works as an answer. It's definitely one of those that makes you think.
