Thought Follows Close Behind

Can you answer both riddles?
  1. I can run, but cannot walk. Wherever I go, thought follows close behind. What am I?
  2. Give me food and I will live. Give me water and I will die. What am I?

These two were asked by Tara. I've 'asked' the second before, but since the first is new, I decided to go with it. Thanks, Tara!

    I run but never walk. I must be worked for but do a lot of work for you. I eat up plenty of your energy the longer I'm used, yet I won't burn a single calorie. What am I? (made this one up just now)

    Let me ask something.... If the second one is an alkali metal, then it can not "die" if it's next to food but if you put it into water..... I think you know what happens next!!!
