There are 7 girls in a bus.
Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat, there are 7 little cats.
Question: How many legs are there in the bus?
I'm posting one puzzle, riddle, math, or statistical problem a day. Try to answer each one and post your answers in the comments section. I'll post the answer the next day. Even if you have the same answer as someone else, feel free to put up your answer, too!

1344 legs.
ReplyDelete10,990 legs.
ReplyDelete10,990 girls and cat legs, more if u include bus/chair legs and driver!
ReplyDelete10990!
ReplyDelete1386
ReplyDeleteOK... I got 11,150 legs total... hmmm..
ReplyDelete10990.00 legs.
ReplyDelete2 for each girl and 4 for each cat
i got 10990 too!

ReplyDeleteSo there's either 10990 legs in total, or zero because buses have wheels not legs
ReplyDeleteITS 10990!!
ReplyDeleteheheh williams' quite right.
ReplyDelete14! They never said the backpacks or cats were on the bus.
ReplyDeleteI heard an old version of that:
ReplyDelete"On my way to St. Ives,
I met a man with 7 wives,
Each of his 7 wives had 7 lives,
And in each of those lives they had 7 eyes.
How many eyes were going in total to St Ives?"
10990?
ReplyDelete1386 is if you forget to add in the little cats.
ReplyDeleteThere are 7 girls. Two legs each for 14 legs.
There are 49 backpacks.
There are 343 big cats. Four legs each for 1372 legs.
There are 2401 little cats. Four legs each for 9604 legs.
That's 10,990 legs.
May we have the correct answer now?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking 10,992 - I was counting the bus driver too.
ReplyDeleteEach Girl has 2 legs (2 x 7 = 14)
ReplyDeleteEach Big cat has 4 legs (4 x 7 = 28)
Each Little cat has 4 legs (4 x 7 = 28)
How many legs are there in the bus?
Total Legs 70
Otherwise, it's a trick question and there are only 14 legs in the bus as all the other legs are in backpacks.
Ad Williams... generally buses don't have wheels 'inside' themselves. Learn to read.
ReplyDeleteThe answer is 10,990 legs, given every living thing listed has the normalized set of legs for their respective species, that all the girls' backpacks are indeed in the bus, and that the 2401 little cats are indeed inside of the girls' backpacks.
i got 238 i think.........
ReplyDelete1582
ReplyDelete14 - girls
7 backpacks - 7 cats w 4 legs each = 196
49 big cats x 7 little cats = 343 w legs each = 1372
14+196+1372=1582
2415
ReplyDelete1582
ReplyDeleteI got 10990, but wasn't thinking of the driver. Of course, no driver is mentioned. It doesn't say the backpacks with the cats are on the bus, but it doesn't say they aren't. However, that's an awful lot of cats and kittens stuck in backpacks, so I'm thinking there's a lot of squealing and meowing going on. ;)
ReplyDelete10990 without drivers.
ReplyDelete1582 legs total (if the bus driver is not on the bus) or 1584 legs (if the bus driver is driving the bus)
ReplyDelete1372 legs for 49 little cats: 4 legs x 7 little cats x 7 x 7
196 legs for 49 big cats: 4 legs x 7 big cats x 7
14 legs for 7 girls: 2 legs x 7
2 legs for a bus driver *optional
so many different answers HAHA... just read the problem carefully - "EACH girl has 7 backpacks" - that means there are 49 backpacks!!! NOT 7! i think thats where most of the discrepancy is coming from, because then you have alot more cats.
ReplyDeleteApologies for my answer guys, apparently I can't read! How I got the same answer as i3ruce I'll never know. If you're going to be picky you can't refer to buses using 'themselves' as they do not posess 'self'. Learn the rules of language.
ReplyDelete10,990
ReplyDeletemost say it is 10,990, and i agree
ReplyDeleteyou have 7 backpacks per girl. one of those packs has 7 cats. that is 49 cats. then each of those 49 cats has 7 kittens, so 49 times 7=343 kittens, plus 49 cats, equals 392 cats total.
then 392 times 4, for each of the legs on a cat=1,568. then add 2 for the girl, and you get 1,570 for each girl. multiply by 7 = 10,990.
point out if you see a flaw in my math, though i think i did it right.
Does a bus have wheels?
ReplyDeleteIs there a bus driver?
are the backpacks on the bus?
are the smaller cats on the bus?
Are there any boys on the bus?
Is this bus the national limbless association and in fact some of the passengers have no/only one leg?
Else its 10,990, I think
14 legs are on the bus.
ReplyDelete14 Les. Cats have Paws. LoL
ReplyDeleteThe answer is most definitely 10,990... simply put how many legs are "in" the bus... no over thinking it is simple multiplication. The question tells you who and what is in the bus...
ReplyDelete7 girls*2 legs/girl = 14 legs
(7 bckpck/girl) (7 girl) = 49 bckpck
(7 bcat/bckpck)(49bckpck) = 343 bcat
343 bckat x 4 legs/bcat = 1372 legs
(7 Lcat/bcat)(343 bcat) = 2401 Lcat
2401 Lcat x 4 legs/Lcat = 9604 legs
14 legs + 1372 legs + 9604 legs = 10990 legs in the bus!
Err. I re-read that and now I am confused. I put there are 14 legs on the bus when in fact, technically a bus has no legs it has wheels. However, the question reads How many legs are there in the bus? IN THE BUS. I'm confused, but I guess as a final answer I would guess 14. Don't cats have 'paws'?
ReplyDelete76846 legs
ReplyDelete10990
ReplyDeletei started with the little cats...
4 legs x 7 little cats = 28 legs, per each big cat
28 + 4 legs for the big cat = 32 legs, so far
32 x 7 big cats = 224 legs, per backpack
There are 7 backpacks...
224 x 7 = 1568 legs, per girl.
Include the legs of the girl...
1568 + 2 = 1570 legs
1570 x 7 girls = 10990 legs
10,990!
ReplyDelete10990 :)
ReplyDeleteAssuming there is no bus driver and each girl has 2 legs, then I suggest there are 14 legs, as it is not said whether the cats and the backpacks are on the bus.
ReplyDeleteI'd say for the purposes of answering this question, given that there is no driver on the bus, the bus is automatic enough to half a self, just imo. It could go either way, given the information, so to claim otherwise would be just as possibly nonsensical.
ReplyDeleteI) think There ar 70 legs
ReplyDeleteit is Simple :)
ReplyDeletegirls legs = 2 X 7 = 14
Each girl has 7 backpacks.
( we have 7 X 7 = 49 backpacks )
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
( 49 X 7 = 343 big cats )
For every big cat, there are 7 little cats.
( 343 x 7 = 2401 little cats )
Question: How many legs are there in the bus?
= ( 343 + 2401 ) X 4 = 10976 + 14 = 10990 legs

ReplyDelete10990 - assuming all the backpacks + girls are actually on the bus
ReplyDeleteI got 406 legs ;)
ReplyDeletefünfhundertmillionetusigvielzwölfnomehundsowiter......
ReplyDelete10992 plus 2 for the bus driver
ReplyDeleteIt's over 9000!!!!
ReplyDeleteI got 9632
ReplyDeleteNow I'm all confused because you people got humongous numbers!
10,990 if no driver, 10,992 if a driver and it's not a cat
ReplyDeleteI got 70
ReplyDelete10,992
ReplyDelete14 DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete14 ... who says the girls are wearing their backpacks?
ReplyDelete10 990..hehe..
ReplyDeleteif ever.. the backpacks were in the bus together with the girls. hehe
1372 big cats legs
ReplyDelete9602 small cats legs
14 girls legs.
total= 10990 legs.
You all are trying to make it too complicated...just use the information provided and do not add in any more or subtract any and you'll come up with 10,990...it's the only answer!
ReplyDeleteIts a total of 10,990 feet.
ReplyDelete7 girls have 14 feet.
they have 49 bags all together.
49 bags have 7 cats each so there are 342 big cats. Each big cat has 7 small cats so there are 2401 small which makes for a total of 2744 cats. cats have 4 feet so in total they have 10,976 feet.
Add the girls feet to the cats (14+10,976) you have 10,990 feet in total.

ReplyDeleteI think it is 10990.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog and keep up the good work,
abudabulabu
10990. Wow, that confusing. Great riddle though, kept me off me school work for about five minutes. Great diversion.
ReplyDeleteDon't know. You haven't stated whether they are all the people on the bus.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the right answer??? Hu..uh..I'm dizzy
ReplyDeleteAssuming no driver or other creatures on the bus:
ReplyDelete10,990 legs
5,488

Hi all! Great response again! I'm loving the interaction. Here's the 'official' answer.
ReplyDeleteI can only deal with the question as it is written, so no created people/drivers/animals other than those described on the bus are allowed ;-) Also, I believe cats have legs, even if they don't have hands (instead they have paws). I could be wrong about that, but I'm pretty sure they have legs.
10,990 is the answer, as it has been described already by many people.
The backpacks could also not be on the bus. What if the girls were actually spides? they would have more then 2 legs =p
ReplyDeleteDo the seats have legs?
i say 14 plus seats (:
ReplyDeletebackpacks dont have to be with the girls on the bus.
whatislife is correct and those who got 10990. But im not the author of this blog, so only he knows. Really interesting...keep it up!!!
ReplyDeleteHmm, it doesn't actually say the backpacks are on the bus so my guess would be 14 legs.
ReplyDelete10,990 is the answer???? How the hell did anyone come to that conclusion?
ReplyDeletePlease show working out as last time I checked cats only had 4 legs and girls only have 2, so 70 surely is the correct answer. Now unless some weird rules apply to girls with cats and kittens on buses, then some strange multiplication has taken place.
Okay, I did it really quick so I hope that I did not make a careless error or two...
ReplyDelete10, 990? :)
there are 14 legs! please take note that there are only 7 girls being mentioned who are in the bus..though there is a cat in each girl's backpack, it never touches the bus' floor...
ReplyDelete14
ReplyDelete19,990 not including the bus drivers legs

ReplyDelete14 legs. No mention of the backpacks in the bus.
ReplyDelete1582.
ReplyDeletewow, i could never get tat even though im in enrichment classes for both reading and math!!!!!!!!!!!!lol
ReplyDeleteAccording to me,
ReplyDeleteIn each backpack there is 1 big CAt and & small cats. So, total Number of legs in a backpack = (8x4) = 56 legs
Now, Each girl has 7 backpacks. So total no. of legs in backpacks of each girl = ( 56x7) = 392 legs.
Now, there are 7 girls in the bus, with everyone having 392 legs in their backpacks. So, total no. of legs in Backpacks = 2744
We have to add total no. of legs of girls to it i.e. 14. So, our final Answer becomes (2744 + 14) = 2758 legs
What say??
for me there are 210 legs
ReplyDeleteI am with the Shadow 2758. It is not that complicated.
ReplyDelete7 x 2 = 14!
ReplyDeleteIsnt that the answer? that was so damn easy!
There are no legs in a bus... :)
ReplyDeleteSorry folks, I made a calculation mistake in the above solution..
ReplyDeleteHere, is the correct answer with correct calculations-
In each backpack there is 1 big CAt and & small cats. So, total Number of legs in a backpack = (8x4) = 32 legs
Now, Each girl has 7 backpacks. So total no. of legs in backpacks of each girl = ( 32x7) = 224 legs.
Now, there are 7 girls in the bus, with everyone having 224 legs in their backpacks. So, total no. of legs in Backpacks = 224x7 = 1568 legs
We have to add total no. of legs of girls to it i.e. 14. So, our final Answer becomes (1568 + 14) = 1582 legs
---whoa..
ReplyDelete---many random answers..O.O
---one thing is sure though..
---the bus is overloaded..:P

ReplyDeleteHuman legs: 7 x 2 = 14
ReplyDeleteBig Cats: 7 x 4 = 28
Small Cats: (7x7)4 = (49)4 = 196
196 + 28 + 14 = 238 + 2
There is a total of 240 legs in the bus (this includes the driver) .... it's either that or 16 legs (cats have paws), Mike, please pick which one's is right.
♥R•H♥
---since the question said that only 14 girls are in the bus...and it's asking how many legs are IN the bus..
ReplyDelete---i say 14..
---if the driver is included..
---make it 16..
---so its either 14 or 16..^^
