Building Fences

A farmer challenges an engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician to fence off the largest amount of area using the least amount of fence.

The engineer made his fence in a circle and said it was the most efficient.

The physicist made a long line and said that the length was infinite. Then he said that fencing half of the Earth was the best.

The mathematician laughed at the others and with his design, beat the others. What did he do?

  1. he didn't fence in anything, thus effectively fencing in the entirety of the earth

  2. If he has to use some fence, then he could just put a fence around either the North or South Pole, then say it was the rest of the world that was fenced in.

  3. Or just draw a fence around his feet and say he is on the other side.

  4. You figured it out. He builds a fence around himself and declares the rest of the world has been fenced in.
