Math time

Solve the following math problem without pencil and paper or a calculator: Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?

  2. That's a little harsh. You must be a Yankees fan.

  3. I got 3100... You asked me to take 1000 first... so i started with -1000.

  4. That's a bit harsh, Andy.

    The question is designed to cause confusion by adding 1000s and 10s. 4 1000s is 4000 while 40 + 30 + 20 + 10 is 100.

If it makes you feel any beter, I got 5100 the first time I did this problem.

Karnov, I didn't say take away 1000, just take. That can be interpreted either way. Interesting thought, though.
