The envelope speaks the truth

There are three envelopes. One has a check in it. You can't touch the envelopes (or look at them through a light or anything like that). Only one envelope has a true statement written on it, the other two are false.

The envelopes have the following writing:

1. This envelope does not have the check
2. This envelope has the check
3. The second envelope does not have the check

Which envelope should you open?

  1. I would take the first envelope. With the first and second message being false and the third being true I think that is the only situation where there is not conflicting answers.

  2. One.

YOu would only have two false and one true statement If the check is in number 1.

Two statements would be true if it was in envelope 2

Three statements would be true if it was in envelope 3

  3. I agree, you should pick envelope 1. Statements 1 and 2 were false, and the only true statement was statement 3.

If the check was in envelope 1, that would make statement 1 false, statement 2 false and statement 3 is the only true statement.

If the check was in envelope 2, statements 1 and 2 would both be true.

If the check was in envelope 3, statements 1 and 3 would both be true.
